Don’t despair — you can still get in somewhere

May 1 was the deadline for acceptees to pick their colleges, but many institutions — at least 375 — still had room for incoming freshmen or transfers. That’s according to the annual Space Availability Survey by the National Association for College Admission Counseling.  (Last year, 279 colleges had post May 1 openings, and the year before, 240.)

Most of the colleges in the national survey are private. In Vermont, seven schools supposedly still have space. Of those, UVM and St. Michael’s are taking only transfers, no more freshmen.

At UVM, as of May 3, 2,550 acceptees had paid deposits to reserve spots in the entering class. Not all of them will show up in the fall — some will go elsewhere, as part of what’s known as “the summer melt” — but with luck, UVM will wind up with a number close to its target for full-time, first-year students: 2,485.

Castleton State College, College of St. Joseph, Marlboro College, Southern Vermont College, and Sterling College still have openings for  for both first-year students and transfers, according to the survey. They all have rolling admissions policies.
